Vein Removal Q & A

What are varicose veins?

Your veins carry deoxygenated blood back to your heart and contain tiny valves that prevent your blood from flowing in the wrong direction. Sometimes those valves malfunction and blood pools in the affected veins.

That causes the bulging and twisted appearance of varicose veins. Spider veins are a milder version of varicose veins and usually appear as flat, red areas with tiny lines branching out from the center.

Can I prevent varicose or spider veins?

Some people have a genetic predisposition to developing varicose or spider veins. You’re also more likely to notice them as you age or during pregnancy.

Spending too much time on your feet can cause varicose veins, and obesity is also a contributing factor. A sedentary lifestyle also increases your risk level. The best way to prevent varicose veins is through an active and healthy lifestyle.

What are the treatment options for varicose veins?

Dr. Warren begins by examining the affected area. She might have you wear prescription-strength compression stockings for a period to see if your veins respond well.

Laser therapy is another treatment option and works by directing concentrated beams of light to destroy your vein walls and redirect your blood to healthier veins. Laser treatments are painless and don’t harm your skin or surrounding tissues.

Depending on the size and location of your varicose veins, you may need multiple laser treatments to achieve the desired effect. Everyone responds differently to laser therapy, but Dr. Warren can evaluate your results and advise you on the best course of action.

What are angiomas and hemangiomas?

Angiomas and hemangiomas are benign skin tumors created from a buildup of tiny blood vessels. An angioma can develop at any age while a hemangioma is present at birth.

Both are generally harmless but may be unsightly. Fortunately, some treatments can safely and effectively remove angiomas and hemangiomas on your cheeks, nose, legs, or other areas of your body.

Dr. Felicity Warren works with you to find the best treatment path. Medication may help slow the growth of hemangiomas, while laser therapy can be an excellent option for removing smaller angiomas. Laser therapy can also address areas of skin discoloration, like port wine stains or sun damage.

To explore these and other treatments to improve the appearance of varicose veins and skin discoloration, book an appointment to meet with Dr. Felicity Warren at your earliest convenience.
